Digital Media Sector
We define Digital Media as all forms of media delivered in digital format in addition to the technologies to develop digital media content.
The digital media sector got its start in the 1970's with the initial success of Atari in starting the video game business but really started to grow in the late 1990's due to a combination of strong growth in video games and the first internet boom. The sector is continuing its strong growth as:
• The Video Game sector reaches the mass market with the next generation consoles with over $30 billion in revenue in 2007; Some consumers are now spending more time playing games than watching TV.
• A new wave of online adoption and growth, particularly in rich media content and social networking applications, is driving the Online Content & Services sector; Consumers are getting a growing amount of their media consumption online and spending increasing amounts online.
• The launch of the iPhone by Apple has set a new standard for the Mobile Content & Services sector in driving significant growth in new mobile content purchases.
• New products and services in Media Technology force changes in the sector; New online business models will drive the distribution of media content from retail to online.
